1. Tell us a little bit about you?

I was born and raised in Richmond, VA and I am the oldest child of 3. My mother was a single mom who became the first African American female Police Captain in the state of Virginia. I am so proud of her.

Being raised by a police officer was not easy and I was taught to work hard and to make the right choices in everything that I did. In high school, I played several instruments and marched in the marching band. I knew early on that I wanted to be a doctor and excelled in every level of my education earning a full academic scholarship to college.

I attended the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and met my husband in my 4th year rotations in Fairfax, Virginia. He attended the New England College of Optometry. I have been married to Dr. Lamont Bunyon for 17 years and we are the proud parents of two teenage sons, Micah who is 16 and Madden who is 13. Both boys love science and math just like their parents.

I love to do all things creative like decorating and crafting but I especially love to sing and write poetry and stories. I also enjoy volunteering with my sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and with my national mother’s organization, Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, of which I am currently the Recording Secretary for my chapter. I love public service, it’s my way of giving back to my community.

2. What made you decide to become an Optometrist?

As a little girl, I was extremely nearsighted so I had the pleasure of visiting my Optometrist several times a year. Dr. Alvin Baum was also a clown in the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. He would greet me wearing his floppy shoes, big red nose and would create animal balloons. The office always smelled of popcorn and cotton candy.

It was the greatest experience a child visiting her doctor could have and the bonus was being able to see even better every time I got new glasses. As such, it was natural for me to think about optometry as a career during my third year at my HBCU, Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.

3. What Optometry school did you go to?

Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry

4. Where do you currently practice?

Co-owner of Special Eye Care and an associate at Solomon Eye Physicians & Surgeons in the DC Metro area.

5. Do you offer any specialty services in your practice?

We offer Pediatric Eye Care and Dry Eye Disease Management

6. Name 1 to 3 hurdles you personally faced in your career and how did you overcome them?

As a mother, wife, co-practice owner, leader in our field and a volunteer in several community organizations, I have found it challenging at times to learn how to create a balance. I finally realized that balance does not exist. Instead of balance, I found that life works best when all areas are integrated.

In 2016, I remember working for a large medical organization in a very toxic work environment and I became very stressed, depressed and burned out. I had to make the difficult decision to leave that job in order to focus on putting my family first. With the support of my husband, I was able to leave that toxic environment and began a new life.

My experiences from the toxic work environments of my past is what let me to write my new book “Fix My Staff, Tools To Create and Retain an Unbreakable Team“. I wrote the book and developed a coaching program to help doctors just like me create a happier and healthier work environment.

Staff issues are a primary reasons for toxic work environments and that creates unnecessary stress for the doctor(s). My goal is to help every doctor develop a positive environment for their office, build a strong team and a successful practice.

7. If you could go back to when you were a student, what advice would you give yourself?

I would say to not limit myself in life and in my career. I would remind myself to enjoy every moment of life because they are all so precious. And I would tell my self enjoy being an optometrist.

In my 21 years of being an optometrist, I have taken opportunities that have not been so great, stayed there too long and regretted the time that I wasted. I would tell my younger self to take action on everything that she wants to do and to not put it off. “Nothing beats a failure but a try!”
