In today’s digital age, your online reputation is more important than ever. Do you know what your patients are saying about you online? If not, it’s time to start paying attention because it can have a direct impact on your practice’s success.

With the internet at everyone’s fingertips, potential patients will often research a practice before making a decision. They’ll read reviews, check ratings, and assess what others have said about their experience with your practice. The statistics are eye-opening:

Did you know that 74% of consumers credit positive reviews with making them trust a local business more? And, 84% of consumers trust online reviews as much as a personal recommendation.

In other words, what people see about your practice online can be the deciding factor in whether they choose you—or your competitor.

7 Tips for Building a Positive Online Reputation

Here are 7 tips to help you build a positive online reputation. These insights were featured in my article published in the June 2018 edition of Women in Optometry Magazine

1. Be Proactive with Your Online Presence

Don’t wait for negative reviews to appear before taking control of your online presence. Be proactive by claiming your practice’s profiles on major review platforms like Google, Yelp, Healthgrades, and social media sites. Fill out your information, add photos, and ensure that everything is accurate.

Example: Dr. Angela Simmons of Simmons Eye Care consistently responds to reviews on Google, whether positive or negative. She takes time to thank patients for positive feedback and addresses concerns in the negative reviews with grace and professionalism, showing patients she cares.

2. Ask for Reviews

Encourage your satisfied patients to leave reviews. Many people only write reviews after a negative experience, so it’s essential to nudge happy patients to share their positive stories. Make it easy by sending a follow-up email after their appointment with a link to your review page.

Example: Dr. Jonathan Reyes sends a thank-you email to every patient following their visit, including a polite request for a review. His patients appreciate the personal touch, which has resulted in more 5-star reviews on multiple platforms.

3. Respond to All Reviews

Engage with your patients by responding to reviews, whether they are positive or negative. Thank your patients for their feedback and demonstrate that you’re listening. If a negative review arises, respond calmly and offer to discuss the matter privately to resolve any issues. This shows other potential patients that you take their feedback seriously and are committed to improving.

4. Provide Outstanding Service

Ultimately, the best way to ensure a positive online reputation is to deliver exceptional service. Your patients’ experiences in your office will directly reflect what they write in their reviews. Pay attention to the little details—your friendliness, promptness, and the care you provide—all of which contribute to a positive overall experience.

Example: Dr. Julie Nguyen ensures that every patient receives individualized care from the moment they walk into her practice. She’s built a reputation for her warmth and attentiveness, and patients rave about her on Yelp and Google.

5. Share Your Positive Reviews

Once you’ve received glowing reviews, share them! Post testimonials on your website, social media channels, and even in your office. Let your prospective patients see the real experiences of satisfied customers, reinforcing their trust in your practice.

Example: Dr. Carla Jenkins regularly shares patient testimonials on her social media channels. These posts not only promote her practice but also foster a sense of community and gratitude among her patients.

6. Monitor Your Online Reputation Regularly

You can’t control what people say about you, but you can stay informed. Set up Google Alerts for your practice’s name, or use online reputation management tools to monitor mentions across platforms. This way, you’ll be able to respond quickly and keep tabs on your online presence.

Example: Dr. Samir Patel uses a reputation management tool that alerts him whenever new reviews are posted. He makes it a priority to respond within 24 hours, ensuring that his practice remains engaged and proactive in its online interactions.

7. Engage on Social Media

Your social media platforms are a reflection of your practice’s culture and values. By posting regularly, responding to comments, and engaging with your followers, you can further shape your online reputation. Use social media to showcase your expertise, share patient success stories, and offer helpful tips.
