Discover the CEO of YOU™ – Surround Yourself with the Right People
One of the most critical steps in your journey to becoming the CEO of YOU™ is surrounding yourself with the right people. The quality of your team directly impacts your level of success. An outstanding team produces outstanding results, while a mediocre team will hold you back. In short, your success hinges on the strength of your team.
As James Justin wisely said, “Success is a team sport. It doesn’t matter how great your vision is, and how great your strategy is, without the right people to support you, you’re not going to make it. Your team will determine the quality of your success.”
Jim Collins, renowned author of Good to Great and Built to Last, emphasizes that leaders must first ensure they have the right team members before they can steer their companies toward greatness.
Building Your Team: A Coach’s Perspective
Think of building your team like a coach assembling players. Every team member has a specific role, but it’s the combined efforts that lead to success. It’s not just about finding the most qualified individuals; it’s about finding the right people who can work together seamlessly.
Who flies the kite? I came across this inspiring fable about teamwork the other day, and it beautifully illustrates how the collective efforts of a team come together to achieve a common goal. Let’s read it together:
Who Flies the Kite?
One windy March day, the Mayor of a small town went for a walk in the park. He came across a young boy flying the biggest and most beautiful kite he had ever seen. The kite soared so high that it could be seen in the next town over.
Impressed, the Mayor wanted to award a “key to the city” to whoever was responsible for flying such a magnificent kite.
“Who’s responsible for flying this kite?” the Mayor asked.
“I am,” said the boy, holding tightly to the string. “I made this kite with my own hands, and I painted all the colors on it. I’m the one flying it!”
“I am,” said the wind. “It’s my breeze that keeps the kite in the air. Without me, it wouldn’t fly at all.”
“Not so fast,” said the kite’s tail. “I provide stability against the wind’s gusts. Without me, the kite would spin out of control and crash to the ground.”
So, who flies the kite?
They all do!
In life and work, it’s easy to forget that success is a team effort. The leader relies on the team, and the team needs a strong leader. Together, they make the kite soar.
The Company You Keep
It’s easy to underestimate the importance of the people you surround yourself with. Whether they’re employees, mentors, family, or trusted friends, the right people challenge you to grow and push you to reach new heights. A strong circle of influence raises the bar and helps you set loftier expectations for yourself.
Often, we don’t realize our full potential until we see what others can achieve. Surrounding yourself with positive, successful people subconsciously challenges you to become your best self. Your success depends on the quality of the people on your team.
