7 Steps to Develop Healthy Relationships with Anyone
Become Self-Aware
In any relationship, you can only offer who you are and what you have. That is why James recommends you become self-aware in order to develop healthy relationships with anyone. Self-awareness is an honest assessment of who you believe you are.
As you become more self-aware, you’ll be able to manage your thoughts, emotions and behaviors and build healthier relationships.
Become Selective
According to Aristotle, “A friend to all is a friend to none.” As such it’s essential to become selective when choosing who is best suited to be in your PAL circles.
In the book, James recommends that you categorize the people in your lives into 3 circles, the Peers circle, the Associates circle and the Loved Ones circle.
The PAL circles will help you become more selective and ensure that your are surrounded by the right people.
Become the Friend You Want to Attract
“If you go looking for a friend, you’re going to find they’re very scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you’ll find them everywhere.” – Zig Ziglar
If you set out to be a friend, you will find people who are eager to reciprocate. That is why James recommends you become the friend you want to attract.
Become an Effective Communicator
In order to develop healthy relationships, we must first understand how to communicate effectively. Many people can talk, but only a few know how to communicate.
In a healthy relationship it is important to communicate openly to build trust and intimacy. When we feel heard, it makes us feel valued, loved and cherished.
Become Loving
Without love, it’s virtually impossible to build healthy relationships because love is the foundation. Having love in your relationships will keep it standing in all the seasons of life.
Become Trustworthy
Trust is essential for building healthy relationships. Trust is to relationships as oxygen is to the body. Without this foundation, no relationship can really endure. Learning to forgive will help keep your trust muscle strong and your relationships healthy.
Become Committed
While our definition may be different, commitment remains an essential key for developing all healthy relationships. Commitment is best demonstrated by action. When you take action that shows you’re committed to the relationship, there will more trust and thus a happier relationship.
