1. Tell us a little bit about you

“I’m originally from Honduras, however, I have lived in South Florida for 20 years. I completed my undergrad at Florida Atlantic University. I’m married and a proud mother of five beautiful children.”

2. What made you decide to become an Optometrist?

“After graduating High school in Honduras, I worked at an Optical as a frame stylist. I later moved to the US, and started working at the Walmart Vision center as a sales associate, soon after I was promoted to Vision Center manager. I enjoyed every aspect of my job. However, what really made me decide to become an optometrist was an encounter with a patient.” 

“I was giving him a vision screening, and he believed I was the doctor, when he realized that he would be examined by someone else he asked me why I was not the doctor. That made me ask myself the same question, and I couldn’t think of a reason not to. Hence, I decided to pursue Optometry.”

3. What Optometry school did you go to?

“Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry”

4. Where do you currently practice?

“I practice in Miami, FL as an independent OD in two Walmart locations.”

5. Do you offer any specialty services in your practice?

“I specialize in Myopia management, as well as Specialty contact lenses; Orthokeratology, sclerals, RGPs. Etc.”

6. Name 1 to 3 hurdles you faced as a private practice owner and how did you overcome them?

“As an independent OD in Walmart, I have very little overhead. However, there are still so many things to take care of. Finding fill-in doctors, staff, insurance billing, etc. My biggest struggle was balancing family, with running a practice, and seeing patients.” 

“I soon realize that I could not do everything by myself. Finding the right support, and delegating non-essential tasks at home and in the office was key to find the right balance between work and family. I can’t say that I have overcome this entirely, but I’ve definitely made a lot of progress.”

7. If you could go back to when you were a student, what advice would you give yourself?

“I would tell myself to take advantage of the student volunteering opportunities. They are so rewarding and great learning experiences..”
