Why Working Moms Shouldn’t Stress about “Mommy Guilt”—Reason #1—“Moms are actually spending more time with their children now than 50 years ago.”
“Did you know that moms are actually spending more time with their children now than 50 years ago?”
Yes, you read that right! Despite the hustle and bustle of modern life, research shows that today’s moms are actually spending more time with their kids than ever before. According to a recent study from the University of California, Irvine, even though more parents work outside the home now than in previous generations, the amount of time spent with children has increased. From 1965 to 2012, researchers found that in all but one Western nation, the time parents spent with their children rose significantly. The only exception was France.
But what does that mean for you, the hardworking mom?
You can finally say sayonara to the stress of “Mommy Guilt”! Yes, you, my friend, are Momtastic! The guilt that has been weighing you down no longer needs to paralyze you. It’s right here in black and white – today’s generation of moms is doing more for their kids than previous generations, and you deserve to give yourself some credit.
You’re Spending More Time Than You Think
How is that possible?
Well, I’m glad you asked… Here’s the kicker: In 1965, moms spent an average of just 54 minutes a day on childcare activities. Yes, that’s right—just 54 minutes! It’s almost hard to imagine. For most of us, that’s barely enough time to get the kids ready for bed. But today’s moms? According to the study, in 2012, that number had nearly doubled to 104 minutes per day, a full hour and 44 minutes!
When we think about “quality time” with our children, it includes everything from preparing meals to bathing, reading bedtime stories, and helping with homework. So, moms, take heart! You are contributing much more to your children’s lives than you give yourself credit for.
But That’s Not All… Super Dads Are Stepping Up!
Though this blog is geared toward moms, we have to give a nod to the amazing dads out there. In 1965, dads spent a mere 16 minutes a day caring for their children. Can you believe it? Sixteen minutes! But dads today are breaking stereotypes and stepping up their game. In 2012, fathers spent an average of 59 minutes per day caring for their children. That’s nearly quadruple the time!
The modern dad is changing diapers, giving baths, telling bedtime stories, and being an active participant in their children’s lives. This Father’s Day, consider giving a special shout-out to the dads who have shown that they are, indeed, super!
The Countdown Recap
At the start of this series, we introduced you to Mara, the Supermom. While Mara is far from perfect, she is an amazing mom, just like so many of us. However, Mara, like many working moms, struggles with feelings of not doing enough for her children and feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to be everything at once.
The purpose of this motherhood article series is to empower women like you and help moms like Mara stop stressing over “Mommy Guilt” by providing the top three reasons below:
- Reason #3—”Guilt is what keeps us human.”
- Reason #2—“Mommy guilt connects women in all walks of life – You are not alone!
- Reason #1—“Moms are actually spending more time with their children now than 50 years ago.”
So, in conclusion…
Sure, you could always be more organized, more energized, and more on top of every detail. But guess what? You’re not a robot, and no one expects you to be. Don’t let “Mommy Guilt” consume you. Instead, recognize that guilt is a sign that you care deeply about your family. After all, if you didn’t care, there wouldn’t be anything to feel guilty about in the first place.
Remember, childhood memories are built on the love and attention you give, not on perfection. So, if today didn’t go as planned, don’t worry—tomorrow is a new day. What truly matters is that you’re present and trying your best.
